More Pest Control Topics
Pharaoh ants are tiny (1.5–2 mm) and thrive inside warm, protected spaces like wall voids, electrical conduits, plumbing lines, and cracks between units in apartment and high-rise buildings. These hidden areas make control challenging, and some DIY treatments involve dusting boric acid powder into these voids.
While boric acid is a low-toxicity product that can help against some pests, its effectiveness for Pharaoh ant control is limited and must be used carefully.
Light, targeted dusting of boric acid can provide supplementary control when used correctly:
Electrical Outlets & Switch Plates
Removing cover plates and applying a light puff of dust into the wall void can target hidden foraging trails.
Ants traveling inside electrical lines may come into contact with the dust.
Plumbing Penetrations
Dust can be applied where plumbing enters walls or cabinets, where ants often travel between units.
Cracks & Crevices
Very fine dusting in hidden, dry cracks can help intercept foragers without leaving visible residue.
⚠️ Key: Use a professional hand duster to apply a thin, barely visible layer—not piles of powder. Too much dust can repel ants.
Despite some strategic benefits, boric acid dusting is not a stand-alone treatment for Pharaoh ants:
Doesn’t Reach Colonies: Pharaoh ants nest deep inside walls or structural voids. Dust rarely reaches queens or brood.
Can Cause Budding: Heavy or poorly placed dust can stress the colony, triggering budding—where colonies split and spread, making infestations worse.
Difficult to Apply Properly: Over-application can contaminate living spaces, appliances, or neighboring units.
Electrical Hazard: Dusting electrical outlets should only be done carefully to avoid short circuits or fire risks.
Pharaoh ants respond far better to slow-acting, low-toxicity baits, like boric acid gel or liquid baits with 0.5–1% concentration. Foragers carry the bait back to the nest, spreading it to queens and larvae.
Baiting:
Targets the entire colony, not just individual foragers.
Avoids budding by being non-repellent.
Works across multiple units when applied strategically.
Dusting can complement baiting by targeting hidden foraging areas, but it should never replace it.
✅ Light, targeted dusting of boric acid in cracks, crevices, and electrical lines can support Pharaoh ant control — but only as part of a larger, bait-focused strategy.
❌ Heavy dusting or using it as a sole method can drive ants deeper into walls or cause them to split colonies, worsening infestations.
For apartment buildings and high-rises, professional baiting programs remain the most reliable way to fully eliminate Pharaoh ant colonies.
