In Alberta, you can encounter a wide variety of pests, both indoors and outdoors. Some of the most common ones include:
Household Pests:
Ants: A very common pest, especially in the spring, as they are attracted to food and water. Carpenter ants can also be a problem as they can cause structural damage by nesting in wood.
Mice: The house mouse is a very common indoor rodent pest. They can enter homes through tiny holes and can bring other pests like fleas and mites with them. They are particularly a problem in colder months when they seek shelter indoors.
Bed Bugs: These small, reddish-brown insects feed on human blood and can infest mattresses and furniture, causing itchy bites and allergic reactions.
Spiders: While most spiders are harmless and can be beneficial for eating other insects, some, like the black widow, can be a health risk.
Flies: House flies, fruit flies, and cluster flies are common nuisances, attracted to food and decaying matter.
Landscape :
Wasps and Hornets: While they are beneficial pollinators, they can be a problem when they build nests near homes, and some species, like hornets, can be aggressive.
Gophers: Both the pocket gopher and Richardson's ground gopher (known as the gopher) can be a nuisance in yards and gardens, creating mounds and damaging plants by burrowing.
